The Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie show highlighted how low the information may go and still have people watching. Shows like “What Never to Wear” and “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” had more of a plot, nevertheless they still used real people in real situations.

Could it be watching them as they’re going through their days? Perhaps it’s a check always to see if their lives are anything like yours. Within the last few “Real Housewives of New Jersey” the women’s lives didn’t even seem real. One woman had a home built that had marble floors and walls. Another had a husband who owned a catering facility and the ladies did basically nothing except take care of themselves and fight. The viewer had to view each episode, because these women didn’t behave like anyone in many people’s lives. Huge numbers of people watched these programs. Unfortunately, this writer was one, but each episode was watched with an expression of disbelief. Why were the people who schedule TV programs subjecting the viewers to these women?
Finally, is this desire for the bizarre lives of the reality show people just like rubbernecking on the highway? Could it be that the viewers are simply curious to see how far these reality show people should go or simply be pushed to go? Are they being scripted or is this their true to life? When one woman at a really sedate supper party at a cafe became so infuriated with another that she actually tipped over a desk, was this real or was it staged for the show? When “The Real Housewives of New York” begun to bait Kelly and turned a cold shoulder to her, was that also staged? Or was it a real situation that had occurred?
Maybe this last point is the actual reason people watch reality shows. No body is sure whether what they are seeing is really true. As an example, Jon and Kate recently told the press that they’d been separated for the full 2 yrs of the show. Yet it seemed that they were a couple. Watching these shows may make your assumptions about life turn upside down. In shows like “The Hills” vapid, uninteresting people talked in monosyllables and swallowed their words.
